Does Watering grass in the sun burn it?

It’s a very common question and the short  answer is no!  In my almost 20 years of doing this I have never burnt a lawn. In fact when you lay a new lawn the water corporation gives you a watering exemption to water up to 3 times a day for a number of weeks to establish the lawn.

Here is some useful information below.

The Best Time to Water:

Watering your grass at the right time of day is crucial for optimal growth and minimising water waste. While many factors come into play, the early morning is widely regarded as the best time to water your lawn. The cool temperatures and calm winds allow for efficient absorption, reducing water loss due to evaporation. Aim to complete your watering session before 9am to maximise the benefits. The Water Corporation in Perth, Australia, allows watering on your scheduled water day of 10mm

  • Morning: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
  • Evening: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Watering in the Sun: Myths Debunked:

Contrary to popular belief, watering your lawn during the sunniest hours of the day does not result in immediate burning of the grass. However, it is not an ideal practice due to increased water evaporation. When water droplets sit on grass blades under the sun’s intense rays, they can act as magnifying glasses, potentially intensifying the sun’s energy and causing leaf scorch.

The Role of Soil Moisture

Understanding your soil’s moisture content is pivotal in determining when to water. Regularly check the soil’s moisture level by inserting a soil moisture metre into the ground. If the soil feels dry to a depth of around 2-3 inches, it’s time to water. However, if the soil is still slightly damp, hold off on watering as excessive moisture can suffocate the grass roots. You may need to utilise high-quality, moisture-retaining soil to ensure longevity between watering days.

Watering Frequency

Frequent watering might seem like the logical choice to keep your lawn hydrated, but it can actually have adverse effects. Shallow watering encourages shallow root growth, leaving your grass vulnerable to drought and other stresses. Instead, promote deep root development by watering less frequently but for longer durations. This practice encourages the grass roots to delve deeper into the soil, accessing vital nutrients and moisture.

Caring for Different Grass Types

Different grass types have varying water requirements. Cool-season grasses, such as Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass, thrive in cooler temperatures and benefit from regular watering. Warm-season grasses, like Couch and Buffalo grass, are more drought-tolerant and require less frequent watering. However in Australia’s hot weather in summer even they can be thirsty guzzlers! Understanding your grass type helps tailor your watering regimen to its specific needs.

The Importance of Deep Roots

Encouraging deep root growth is key to a healthy lawn. Deep roots enable grass to access moisture stored deeper in the soil, making it more resilient during periods of water scarcity. Gradually increase the duration of your watering sessions to promote deep root growth over time. This practice will help your lawn withstand dry spells and maintain its vibrant green hue.

Watering Systems and Water Restrictions

Investing in a well-designed sprinkler or irrigation system is a wise choice for efficient water distribution. These systems ensure even coverage, preventing overwatering in some areas and underwatering in others.
