Our Reticulation Installation Process

One thing that can help you is to think of it like a project. How much would you pay someone to renovate a bathroom, etc.? A full reticulation setup can take a significant amount of time. It’s all your outdoor plumbing, and we believe in setting it upright for the long term. Here’s a detailed overview of how we install our reticulation systems.

Pressure and Flow Testing

Pre-Installation Testing

Before any installation, we perform pressure and flow tests to determine the number of stations needed. Many systems fail due to insufficient stations, resulting in low pressure and ineffective sprinklers. We prefer to err on the side of caution.

Controller Installation

Hardwired Installation

We hardwire our reticulation controllers directly to the mains electricity, reducing the chance of accidental switch-offs. You need to intentionally turn it off by switching the dial in the controller to the off position for winter or using your phone app.

Quality Brands

We use reliable brands such as Hunter and Rain Bird. Controllers are fixed to the wall neatly using wall plugs and screws to ensure they are firm and not loose.

Warranty

All our controllers come with a warranty for peace of mind.

Future Proofing

We ensure the controller is large enough for your entire property to avoid future upgrades when adding additional zones.

Plumbers Cut-In

Licensed Plumber

We use a licensed plumber to perform the plumbing connections. This ensures compliance with all regulations and standards.

Typically attached directly to the copper pipe with no joins to contain water pressure at the source.

Isolation Valve

An isolation valve is installed to allow for the entire reticulation system to be shut off in case of an emergency, providing an extra layer of control and safety.

Check Valve

A one-way check valve is included to prevent backflow, which protects your drinking water supply from contamination.

We ensure the controller is large enough for your entire property to avoid future upgrades when adding additional zones.

Master Solenoid

Connection

Typically attached directly to the copper pipe with no joins to contain water pressure at the source.

Wiring

Connected using waterproof gel connectors to ensure durability and reliability.

Brand

We use tested master solenoids, primarily from Rain Bird, but occasionally other reliable brands.

Location

Usually at the water meter but can be installed anywhere along the copper piping.

Function

The master solenoid helps prevent system leaks by switching off the entire reticulation  system when not in use, reducing the risk of continuous leaks.

Main Supply Line

Material

We use strong class 12 PVC piping or blue line plumbing piping for the main supply line. This is more durable and robust compared to class 9 PVC piping.

Placement

The main supply line is strategically placed to avoid tree roots and other potential hazards.

Protection

Under driveways, we typically install a 90mm or 100mm sleeve for protection. Where protective sleeves cannot be used, we install blue line plumbing piping to ensure durability and prevent leaks.

Solenoids

Quality Brands

We use high-quality solenoid brands such as Rain Bird and Hunter, to ensure reliable operation.

Installation

Solenoids are installed using PVC or pre-made solenoid manifolds with thread seal tape on all joints and waterproof gel connectors for wiring.

Housing

Typically housed in strong commercial spotter boxes, but different boxes may be used depending on the scenario and system requirements.

Accessibility

Solenoids are placed in accessible spots for easy maintenance and visibility.

Wiring

Multicore Wiring

We use multicore wiring to easily differentiate between different wires, simplifying problem-solving in the field.

Conduit Protection

All wiring is placed inside the conduit for added protection, preventing accidental cuts and damage.

Adequate Wires

We ensure there are enough wires for every port on the controller being installed, planning for future expansions.

Extra Wires

Additional wires are included to accommodate potential future needs, avoiding the need for re-wiring.

No Joins

We ensure no joins in the wiring. This means running a continuous line from the controller to the solenoid valves, with connections only at the solenoid box and the controller, using waterproof gel connectors to prevent shorts and ensure longevity.

Pipe Work for Lawn and Garden Beds

For gardens and lawns, we prefer PVC piping for its durability. PVC is long-lasting and robust, suitable for new installations. We use poly pipe in certain situations, such as when we are installing a dripline, or if the existing system is poly pipe etc.

We may also use blueline plumbing piping in certain situations.

Sprinklers

Sprinkler Placement

We place sprinklers just beneath the ground level to avoid damage from lawnmowers, yet high enough to pop up effectively. We use articulated risers, flexible fittings with three elbows and a riser that connects to the pipe, allowing easy adjustment of the sprinkler’s angle and height during installation. This also acts like suspension, giving way under heavy weight to prevent damage.

Head-to-Head Coverage

We ensure full head-to-head coverage where one sprinkler throws water to the next, particularly in lawn areas to avoid dry patches. In garden areas, while we also aim for head-to-head coverage, sprinklers may be more spread out. Missing even a small section in lawns can cause that section to brown off.

Head-to-Head Coverage

Pop-Up Sprinklers

We use a minimum of 100mm pop-ups for new installations to ensure they stay beneath the ground and clear properly when activated. For garden beds, taller 300mm pop-ups may be used for better coverage while remaining non-visible for aesthetics. We use quality brands like Rain Bird and Hunter, with Rain Bird’s Seal-A-Matic (SAM) offering high-end features. Scan the QR code above to read more about the best sprinklers.

Sprinkler Nozzles

We use waterwise rotating nozzles as our main sprinkler. These apply the water very evenly and cut through the wind. We use a range of nozzles, but this one is our favourite for the superior results it delivers.

Garden Risers

A combination of pop-ups and garden risers are used for garden areas. Articulated risers, as pictured, are buried in the ground but provide flexibility and durability, moving under impact to avoid snapping and ensuring full coverage with overlap.

Articulated Riser Construction

The articulated riser, also known as a swing arm, typically has three 90-degree elbows. This design allows for flexible movement and rotation in all directions, ensuring that the sprinkler can be positioned correctly even in challenging areas. The flexibility of the articulated riser helps prevent damage by allowing some movement if pressure is applied, such as from a lawnmower or foot traffic.

Connection to Pop-Up Sprinkler

The articulated riser is connected to the lateral line of your reticulation system. The other end is attached to the pop-up sprinkler. This setup allows for easy height and angle adjustments, ensuring that the sprinkler sits just below the ground when not in use and pops up properly during operation.

Beneath Ground Installation

The entire setup, including the articulated riser and pop-up sprinkler, is installed beneath the ground. This ensures the sprinklers are protected from damage while remaining effective at watering your lawn or garden.

Bore Systems

Experience and Services

Although we do not install bores, we are highly experienced with bore systems. We can install and repair almost any fault, working closely with electricians.

Other Types of Systems

We can install subsurface drip reticulation systems, drippers, sprays, tree bubblers and more. We are not limited to one type of system. If you have something in mind that’s not in our guide here, reach out!
